1===========================================2Control Flow Integrity Design Documentation3===========================================4 5This page documents the design of the :doc:`ControlFlowIntegrity` schemes6supported by Clang.7 8Forward-Edge CFI for Virtual Calls9==================================10 11This scheme works by allocating, for each static type used to make a virtual12call, a region of read-only storage in the object file holding a bit vector13that maps onto to the region of storage used for those virtual tables. By loading57from indexed offsets into the byte array and applying a mask, a program can58test bits from the bit set with a relatively short instruction sequence. Bit59vectors may overlap so long as they use different bits. Some of the optimizations we are about109to introduce cause the compiler to use a different layout or a different110sequence of machine instructions.111 112Stripping Leading/Trailing Zeros in Bit Vectors113~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~114 115If a bit vector contains leading or trailing zeros, we can strip them from116the vector. The compiler will emit code to check if the pointer is in range117of the region covered by ones, and perform the bit vector check using a118truncated version of the bit vector. At worst, bit vectors in disjoint hierarchies only193need to cover their disjoint hierarchy. But the closer that classes in194sub-hierarchies are laid out to each other, the smaller the bit vectors for195those sub-hierarchies need to be (see "Stripping Leading/Trailing Zeros in Bit196Vectors" above). The `GlobalLayoutBuilder`_ class is responsible for laying197out the globals efficiently to minimize the sizes of the underlying bitsets.198 199.. _GlobalLayoutBuilder: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/main/llvm/include/llvm/Transforms/IPO/LowerTypeTests.h200 201Alignment202~~~~~~~~~203 204If all gaps between address points in a particular bit vector are multiples205of powers of 2, the compiler can compress the bit vector by strengthening206the alignment requirements of the virtual table pointer. To make this more likely to happen, we insert259padding between virtual tables that in many cases aligns address points to260a power of 2. Specifically, our padding aligns virtual tables to the next261highest power of 2 bytes; because address points for specific base classes262normally appear at fixed offsets within the virtual table, this normally263has the effect of aligning the address points as well.264 265This scheme introduces tradeoffs between decreased space overhead for266instructions and bit vectors and increased overhead in the form of padding. We267therefore limit the amount of padding so that we align to no more than 128268bytes. This number was found experimentally to provide a good tradeoff.269 270Eliminating Bit Vector Checks for All-Ones Bit Vectors271~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~272 273If the bit vector is all ones, the bit vector check is redundant; we simply274need to check that the address is in range and well aligned. This is more275likely to occur if the virtual tables are padded.276 277Forward-Edge CFI for Virtual Calls by Interleaving Virtual Tables278-----------------------------------------------------------------279 280Dimitar et. al. proposed a novel approach that interleaves virtual tables in [1]_.281This approach is more efficient in terms of space because padding and bit vectors are no longer needed.282At the same time, it is also more efficient in terms of performance because in the interleaved layout283address points of the virtual tables are consecutive, thus the validity check of a virtual284vtable pointer is always a range check.285 286At a high level, the interleaving scheme consists of three steps: 1) split virtual table groups into287separate virtual tables, 2) order virtual tables by a pre-order traversal of the class hierarchy288and 3) interleave virtual tables.289 290The interleaving scheme implemented in LLVM is inspired by [1]_ but has its own291enhancements (more in `Interleave virtual tables`_).292 293.. Dimitar Bounov, Rami Gökhan Kıcı, Sorin Lerner.294 295Split virtual table groups into separate virtual tables296~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~297 298The Itanium C++ ABI glues multiple individual virtual tables for a class into a combined virtual table (virtual table group).299The interleaving scheme, however, can only work with individual virtual tables so it must split the combined virtual tables first.300In comparison, the old scheme does not require the splitting but it is more efficient when the combined virtual tables have been split.301The `GlobalSplit`_ pass is responsible for splitting combined virtual tables into individual ones.302 303.. _GlobalSplit: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/main/llvm/lib/Transforms/IPO/GlobalSplit.cpp304 305Order virtual tables by a pre-order traversal of the class hierarchy306~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~307 308This step is common to both the old scheme described above and the interleaving scheme.309For the interleaving scheme, since the combined virtual tables have been split in the previous step,310this step ensures that for any class all the compatible virtual tables will appear consecutively.311For the old scheme, the same property may not hold since it may work on combined virtual tables.312 313For example, consider the following four C++ classes:314 315.. code-block:: c++316 317  struct A {318    virtual void f1();319  };320 321  struct B : A {322    virtual void f1();323    virtual void f2();324  };325 326  struct C : A {327    virtual void f1();328    virtual void f3();329  };330 331  struct D : B {332    virtual void f1();333    virtual void f2();334  };335 336This step will arrange the virtual tables for A, B, C, and D in the order of *vtable-of-A, vtable-of-B, vtable-of-D, vtable-of-C*.337 338Interleave virtual tables339~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~340 341This step is where the interleaving scheme deviates from the old scheme. Instead of laying out342whole virtual tables in the previously computed order, the interleaving scheme lays out table343entries of the virtual tables strategically to ensure the following properties:344 345(1) offset-to-top and RTTI fields layout property346 347The Itanium C++ ABI specifies that offset-to-top and RTTI fields appear at the offsets behind the348address point. Note that libraries like libcxxabi do assume this property.349 350(2) virtual function entry layout property351 352For each virtual function the distance between a virtual table entry for this function and the corresponding353address point is always the same. This property ensures that dynamic dispatch still works with the interleaving layout.354 355Note that the interleaving scheme in the CFI implementation guarantees both properties above whereas the original scheme proposed356in [1]_ only guarantees the second property.357 358To illustrate how the interleaving algorithm works, let us continue with the running example.359The algorithm first separates all the virtual table entries into two work lists. Since work list 1 now has one more entry than399work list 2, a padding entry is added to the latter. In the interleaved layout,422there are two entries for f2: B::f2 and D::f2. The distance between &B::f2423and its address point D::offset-to-top (the entry immediately after &B::rtti) is 5 entry-length, so is the distance between &D::f2 and C::offset-to-top (the entry immediately after &D::rtti).424 425Forward-Edge CFI for Indirect Function Calls426============================================427 428Under forward-edge CFI for indirect function calls, each unique function429type has its own bit vector, and at each call site we need to check that the430function pointer is a member of the function type's bit vector. This scheme431works in a similar way to forward-edge CFI for virtual calls, the distinction432being that we need to build bit vectors of function entry points rather than433of virtual tables.434 435Unlike when re-arranging global variables, we cannot re-arrange functions436in a particular order and base our calculations on the layout of the437functions' entry points, as we have no idea how large a particular function438will end up being (the function sizes could even depend on how we arrange439the functions). Instead, we build a jump table, which is a block of code440consisting of one branch instruction for each of the functions in the bit441set that branches to the target function, and redirect any taken function442addresses to the corresponding jump table entry. In this way, the distance443between function entry points is predictable and controllable. The526cross-DSO mode, enabled with **-f[no-]sanitize-cfi-cross-dso** relaxes527this requirement by allowing virtual and indirect calls to cross the528DSO boundary.529 530Assuming the following setup: the binary consists of several531instrumented and several uninstrumented DSOs. Some of them may be532dlopen-ed/dlclose-d periodically, even frequently.533 534  - Calls made from uninstrumented DSOs are not checked and just work.535  - Calls inside any instrumented DSO are fully protected.536  - Calls between different instrumented DSOs are also protected, with537     a performance penalty (in addition to the monolithic CFI538     overhead).539  - Calls from an instrumented DSO to an uninstrumented one are540     unchecked and just work, with performance penalty.541  - Calls from an instrumented DSO outside of any known DSO are542     detected as CFI violations.543 544In the monolithic scheme a call site is instrumented as545 546.. code-block:: none547 548   if (!InlinedFastCheck(f))549     abort();550   call *f551 552In the cross-DSO scheme it becomes553 554.. code-block:: none555 556   if (!InlinedFastCheck(f))557     __cfi_slowpath(CallSiteTypeId, f);558   call *f559 560CallSiteTypeId561--------------562 563``CallSiteTypeId`` is a stable process-wide identifier of the564call-site type. For a virtual call site, the type in question is the class565type; for an indirect function call it is the function signature. The566mapping from a type to an identifier is an ABI detail. In the current,567experimental, implementation the identifier of type T is calculated as568follows:569 570  -  Obtain the mangled name for "typeinfo name for T".571  -  Calculate MD5 hash of the name as a string.572  -  Reinterpret the first 8 bytes of the hash as a little-endian573     64-bit integer.574 575It is possible, but unlikely, that collisions in the576``CallSiteTypeId`` hashing will result in weaker CFI checks that would577still be conservatively correct.578 579CFI_Check580---------581 582In the general case, only the target DSO knows whether the call to583function ``f`` with type ``CallSiteTypeId`` is valid or not.  To584export this information, every DSO implements585 586.. code-block:: none587 588   void __cfi_check(uint64 CallSiteTypeId, void *TargetAddr, void *DiagData)589 590This function provides external modules with access to CFI checks for591the targets inside this DSO.  For each known ``CallSiteTypeId``, this592function performs an ``llvm.type.test`` with the corresponding type593identifier. It reports an error if the type is unknown, or if the594check fails. Depending on the values of compiler flags595``-fsanitize-trap`` and ``-fsanitize-recover``, this function may596print an error, abort and/or return to the caller. ``DiagData`` is an597opaque pointer to the diagnostic information about the error, or598``null`` if the caller does not provide this information.599 600The basic implementation is a large switch statement over all values601of CallSiteTypeId supported by this DSO, and each case is similar to602the InlinedFastCheck() in the basic CFI mode.603 604CFI Shadow605----------606 607To route CFI checks to the target DSO's __cfi_check function, a608mapping from possible virtual / indirect call targets to the609corresponding __cfi_check functions is maintained. This mapping is610implemented as a sparse array of 2 bytes for every possible page (4096611bytes) of memory. The table is kept readonly most of the time.612 613There are 3 types of shadow values:614 615  -  Address in a CFI-instrumented DSO.616  -  Unchecked address (a “trusted” non-instrumented DSO). Encoded as617     value 0xFFFF.618  -  Invalid address (everything else). Encoded as value 0.619 620For a CFI-instrumented DSO, a shadow value encodes the address of the621__cfi_check function for all call targets in the corresponding memory622page. It is recommended that652platforms provide their own implementations, usually as part of libc653or libdl.654 655Position-independent executable requirement656-------------------------------------------657 658Cross-DSO CFI mode requires that the main executable is built as PIE.659In non-PIE executables the address of an external function (taken from660the main executable) is the address of that function’s PLT record in661the main executable. This would break the CFI checks.662 663Backward-edge CFI for return statements (RCFI)664==============================================665 666This section is a proposal. As of March 2017 it is not implemented.667 668Backward-edge control flow (`RET` instructions) can be hijacked669via overwriting the return address (`RA`) on stack.670Various mitigation techniques (e.g. `SafeStack`_, `RFG`_, `Intel CET`_)671try to detect or prevent `RA` corruption on stack.672 673RCFI enforces the expected control flow in several different ways described below.674RCFI heavily relies on LTO.675 676Leaf Functions677--------------678If `f()` is a leaf function (i.e. it has no calls679except maybe no-return calls) it can be called using a special calling convention680that stores `RA` in a dedicated register `R` before the `CALL` instruction.681`f()` does not spill `R` and does not use the `RET` instruction,682instead it uses the value in `R` to `JMP` to `RA`.683 684This flavour of CFI is *precise*, i.e. the function is guaranteed to return685to the point exactly following the call.686 687An alternative approach is to688copy `RA` from stack to `R` in the first instruction of `f()`,689then `JMP` to `R`.690This approach is simpler to implement (does not require changing the caller)691but weaker (there is a small window when `RA` is actually stored on stack).692 693 694Functions called once695---------------------696Suppose `f()` is called in just one place in the program697(assuming we can verify this in LTO mode).698In this case we can replace the `RET` instruction with a `JMP` instruction699with the immediate constant for `RA`.700This will *precisely* enforce the return control flow no matter what is stored on stack.701 702Another variant is to compare `RA` on stack with the known constant and abort703if they don't match; then `JMP` to the known constant address.704 705Functions called in a small number of call sites706------------------------------------------------707We may extend the above approach to cases where `f()`708is called more than once (but still a small number of times).709With LTO we know all possible values of `RA` and we check them710one-by-one (or using binary search) against the value on stack.711If the match is found, we `JMP` to the known constant address, otherwise abort.712 713This protection is *near-precise*, i.e. it guarantees that the control flow will714be transferred to one of the valid return addresses for this function,715but not necessary to the point of the most recent `CALL`.716 717General case718------------719For functions called multiple times a *return jump table* is constructed720in the same manner as jump tables for indirect function calls (see above).721The correct jump table entry (or its index) is passed by `CALL` to `f()`722(as an extra argument) and then spilled to stack.723The `RET` instruction is replaced with a load of the jump table entry,724jump table range check, and `JMP` to the jump table entry.725 726This protection is also *near-precise*.727 728Returns from functions called indirectly729----------------------------------------730 731If a function is called indirectly, the return jump table is constructed for the732equivalence class of functions instead of a single function.733 734Cross-DSO calls735---------------736Consider two instrumented DSOs, `A` and `B`. `A` defines `f()` and `B` calls it.737 738This case will be handled similarly to the cross-DSO scheme using the slow path callback.739 740Non-goals741---------742 743RCFI does not protect `RET` instructions:744  * in non-instrumented DSOs,745  * in instrumented DSOs for functions that are called from non-instrumented DSOs,746  * embedded into other instructions (e.g. `0f4fc3 cmovg %ebx,%eax`).747 748.. _SafeStack: https://clang.llvm.org/docs/SafeStack.html749.. _RFG: https://xlab.tencent.com/en/2016/11/02/return-flow-guard750.. _Intel CET: https://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2016/06/09/intel-release-new-technology-specifications-protect-rop-attacks751 752Hardware support753================754 755We believe that the above design can be efficiently implemented in hardware.756A single new instruction added to an ISA would allow to perform the forward-edge CFI check757with fewer bytes per check (smaller code size overhead) and potentially more758efficiently.
