Is this a real Linux kernel?

Yes — brintOS runs a real Linux kernel compiled to WebAssembly. See Computer in the Browser for the details.

Can I work with my files locally?

Yes: download files or an ext4 image, or run the machine through the Node launcher. The native FUSE mount client is retired. See Files & images.
